Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Orthopedic & Spine Center (MECOSC)

Nyack, New York

Montefiore and Aspect Health sought to create a new ambulatory care center that would redefine their existing care model while expanding their vision of “healthcare hospitality,” a response to the ever-changing healthcare landscape and learnings from the pandemic. The new center’s objectives include creating a healthcare environment inspired by hospitality to enhance the patient experience through a welcoming atmosphere. To achieve these goals, they partnered with Gensler and the Gensler Research Institute (GRI) to incorporate evidence-based research into design decisions, emphasizing equity of care, patient experience, and improving the work environment for care providers.

Key design highlights include a welcoming double-height lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows and a striking hanging sculpture to create a hospitality-inspired ambiance. Nature motifs and organic patterns further enhance the calming environment, extending even to the MRI rooms with illuminated nature-themed ceilings. The resulting healthcare experience empowers patients — giving them ownership over the spaces where they are receiving care — while also minimizing caregiver burnout and other occupational stressors for the providers.
