Qingdao Rehabilitation University
Qingdao, China
The University of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is positioned to be a premiere international university that integrates technological innovation, talent training, health and wellness development, and services. Jointly designed by Gensler and Tsinghua University Architectural Design & Research Institute (THAD), the project sets a new benchmark for innovative, high-quality developments in the rehabilitation industry, and is a model for promoting the living quality and welfare of disabled and elderly people.
With the vision of creating a caring, inclusive campus for all, the design team focused on how to embody the concept of “reconstruction of life,” aiming to create a people-oriented, future-ready education campus closely integrated with the surrounding environment. It’s also a new cultural landmark that integrates modern rehabilitation concepts, life care, and the culture of traditional Chinese benevolence
With “One-Spine, One Core, and Multiple Clusters” as the master planning structure, the health and rehabilitation campus encourages a fully walkable and safe environment that is free from the intrusion of vehicles on campus. By fostering the integration of academics and practice, the campus truly becomes a diversified community hub. Each academic department encourages outdoor learning and sharing in public spaces, enabling interdisciplinary integration and improving the efficiency of facilities.
The heart of the campus revolves around an oval waterscape, which acts as a key focus and point of orientation. The waterscape integrates an amphitheater, which can host a variety of ceremonial, public, and cultural events, and offers a place for informal gatherings and relaxation.
