New Museum of Contemporary Art
New York, New York
Tokyo-based architects SANAA partnered with Gensler to realize this competition-winning design for the 52,000 square-foot New Museum on the Bowery. The museum accommodates four flexible gallery floors and a host of support and public space, including an auditorium, int a tight footprint. A dramatic, glass-enclosed “skyroom” tops the museum and offers panoramic views of New York City. Gensler continued its relationship with the New Museum through collaboration on a series of complex, large-scale art installations, including Carsten Höller's "Slide" and Chris Burden’s "Ghost Ship" and "Twin Quasi-Legal Skyscrapers." Most recently Gensler collaborated with the Museum to design NEW INC, the first museum-led Incubator.
