Cosmic Bliss

Portland, Oregon

Tucked into a bright, corner retail space in Portland’s Pearl District is a new scoop shop proudly catering to ice cream lovers seeking health-conscious options. The design team worked closely with Cosmic Bliss to create their first brick-and-mortar and flagship shop — a space designed to be an experience from the moment one steps off the sidewalk and through the doors.

Cosmic Bliss occupies over 3,000 square feet, with an abundance of glass providing visibility to the product and the shop’s unique ambiance — a blend of hospitality design with a lounge atmosphere and a coffee shop vibe. Curved shapes, metal lattice, and tamboured wood infuse the space with natural elements, creating a space that can morph from day to night. Lush foliage adds a biophilic element to the floor level planters and baskets hanging from the ceiling. Mixed lounge seating, large banquette with café tables, and a sidewalk-facing bar offer areas designed for personal space and larger parties. As a whimsical nod to ice cream scoops, pink, textured, concrete light fixture shades are reminiscent of strawberry ice cream. A color palette of blue, pink, and yellow carries a cool, natural vibe through the space.

The design team incorporated the brand’s prominent sky blue into the shop’s design in surprising ways, including splashed across a unique focal wall endearing to the local prominent art scene. Artist Timothy Goodman painted a bold and colorful mural in Sharpie style featuring call-out descriptors of the brand like “grass-fed dairy,” “sustainability,” “plant-based,” and “gluten free,” intermingled with illustrations reflective of Portland like trees, beer, basketballs, and other symbols representing the city.
