The Lark Inn

San Francisco, California

In partnership with Larkin Street Youth Services, AEC Cares, and local industry peers, Gensler redesigned Lark Inn, a shelter for homeless youth in San Francisco that was in need of a new aesthetic and interior refresh for three spaces — the entry, community space, and dorm within the shelter. The project centered on creating comfortable, functional spaces and using vibrant environmental graphics to create a welcoming and secure space for youth residents. Sustainability was a key focus in the renovation by integrating features such as reusing furniture, utilizing sustainable materials, implementing energy-efficient LED lighting, incorporating indoor plants for enhanced air quality, and embracing a low-maintenance design. Gensler took the lead on hand-painted environmental graphics, which were inspired by the work of the legendary American musician, Glenn Frey, and his quote, “California is a place where you can be anybody you want to be.” This philosophy guided the concept and design, symbolizing hope, freedom, and joy, while embodying the diverse California landscape. The result was a space that not only contributes to the well-being of both residents and the environment but creates a familiar and inspiring environment that embodies the spirit of the organization. The Lark Inn was also recognized by the IIDA Northern California Chapter with a 2024 Honor Award for the design of the space.
