North Side Housing and Supportive Services

Chicago, Illinois

North Side Housing and Supportive Services (NSHSS), operated in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Housing, is a 10,000-square-foot facility in a formerly vacant building that provides a much-needed place of shelter for unhoused men in Chicago. Serving 70 men per night, the new shelter offers integrated healthcare and social services while supporting residents on their journey toward stable housing.

The trauma-informed design infuses the notions of “home” with a synthesis of calming finishes, biophilic elements, and residential comforts to foster healing, psychological safety, and a sense of belonging. The shelter’s reception area serves as the shelter’s communal heart, offering space beyond the semi-private sleeping rooms where residents can foster social connections.

NSHSS takes a non-congregate housing approach, avoids sensory stressors, and underscores the idea that good design is for everyone. Every design decision balances well-being and self-worth; skylights will allow natural light to flood the spaces while maintaining privacy, and open shelving is filled with plants, books, and other items that evoke a sense of hospitality.
