In Motorola’s vast new four-floor workplace, the Chicago Merchandise Mart’s enormous floor plates are scaled into smaller work spaces and neighborhoods through a system of amenities including micro-kitchens, game rooms and multipurpose areas. Notable landmarks in the company’s history dot the office neighborhoods, stairways and circulation paths, employing unique themes and creative uses of materials and graphics to engage employees and maintain a human scale. Amenity areas celebrate juxtapositions relevant to the company’s evolution and its new urban location, including city vs. nature; industrial past vs. technological future; and scientific advances vs. engineering design.
