Herald Examiner Building

Designed by Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst’s newspaper headquarters, The Herald Examiner Building is an architectural icon on Broadway that was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1977. Preserving its historic nature while paying homage to its unique design, Gensler collaborated with the Georgetown Company to transform the iconic Hearst property into a distinctly modern workplace environment that features unparalleled retail and a restaurant. A major component of the project is the structural retrofitting and seismic upgrade of the 100-year-old concrete building. Gensler preserved the building’s unique original details, including irreplaceable finishes, soaring ceiling heights, operable steel windows, and sawtooth skylights. In addition to the creative office space, the reimagined Herald Examiner Building welcomes a variety of retail configurations with the ability to feature signage along Broadway, 11th, and the newly created Paseo. Outdoor bistro seating in the original grand arched window frames and double wood doors take advantage of the newly-designed Broadway streetscape.
