Haizhu Innovation Bay

Haizhu Innovation Bay envisions a hub for innovation-leading enterprises that will attract both talent and tourism as a new destination in Lijiao at the intersection of Guangzhou City Central Axis and Pearl River. The design is based on the concept of a “Pixel City,” which breaks down the urban complexity into smaller parts to create experiential parts, or pixels. In designing the 287,000-square-meter master plan, Gensler used a holistic approach to highlight the local scale of development and break it down into a series of pixels.

Gensler’s design team proposed a vision for the innovation hub that goes beyond merely creating a new landmark. Following a careful examination of Lijiao’s cultural heritage, historic water town in the west, and its eco environment of spacious Haizhu Wetland in the east, the design of the master plan aspires to celebrate the cultural legacy and bring authenticity to Guangzhou’s urban fabric. The project emphasizes resilience in order to preserve natural resources, enhance performance, and elevate the human experience.
