Gensler was tasked with designing Chubu Centrair International Airport’s new terminal (T2) for LCC flights. The project began with client sessions to determine a vision for the terminal.

The team created a separate design concept for departures and arrivals. For departures, the connecting corridor to the boarding gate is designed in the image of a runway, representing the experience of taking off to the skies. The imagery also ties in with the interactive airplane theme park, “Flight of Dreams,” which travelers are encouraged to visit on the way to their gates. To create a sense of connection to the central area of Japan with our arriving guests, Gensler designed wall graphics inspired by themes of the area and Japanese pop culture. The space heightens anticipation for the journey ahead.

中部国際空港セントレアに新たに加わったLCC向けのターミナル「第2ターミナル（T2）」のデザインは、クライアントとのビジョニングセッションを通し、ターミナルのあるべき姿を模索することから始まった。

空港のメイン出入口から第2ターミナルまでは距離があるため、いかに利用者に移動時間を長く感じさせないデザインとするかがプロジェクトの課題であった。 ゲンスラーはターミナルから出発する人、そして到着して中部エリアを訪れる人それぞれの利用者に、２つの異なるストーリのデザインコンセプトを構築した。

搭乗ゲートまでの連絡通路は滑走路と空をイメージし、飛び立つまでのエクスペリエンスを表現した空間とした。 また、連絡通路に併設された体験型飛行機テーマパーク「Flight of Dreams」を訪れた利用者が、そこでの体験の余韻を感じながら搭乗口まで移動できるよう、テーマパークとの一体感を持たせたデザインとした。 一方到着ゲートから出口までの連絡通路には、中部エリアとのつながりを感じてもらえるよう、周辺地域や日本のカルチャーを象徴するグラフィックウォールをデザイン。 これからはじまる旅への期待感を高める空間を目指し、中部エリアと利用者とをつなげる「架け橋」としての役割を感じさせるデザインとなった。
