American Psychological Association
Washington, D.C.
The American Psychological Association hired Gensler initially to transform the existing rooftop area of its building into a multi-purpose room with views to the U.S. Capitol Dome. During the design process, that scope evolved into a full urban retreat comprising a suite of meeting and support spaces that flow into planted outdoor roof terraces. Nature is subtly evidenced through materials, fixtures and finishes, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, for an expansive and uplifting feel throughout the elevated space. The project’s elegance belies the technical difficulty involved, which included raising elevators, removing columns and adding new steel framing.
