Two Gensler Architects Elevated to AIA College of Fellows in 2020

New York — Gensler is proud to announce that Maddy Burke-Vigeland (NY) and Roger Sherman (LA) were elevated to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, in recognition of their significant contributions to the profession of architecture and society.

The College of Fellows honors members who have contributed to the profession and society on a national level. It also further recognizes an individual with growing and significant influence on the future of the industry. This recognition is considered one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member.

Maddy Burke-Vigeland, FAIA, is a Principal and Project Director in Gensler’s New York office. She has a broad portfolio of education and cultural projects and a reputation as a leader of collaborations with high-profile clients and peer design firms. In addition to her role as Project Director for the recently completed renovation of the iconic Ford Foundation, she was Gensler’s Principal-in-Charge for the expansion project for the Museum of Modern Art, and served in a similar capacity for the Vagelos Graduate and Medical Education Center at Columbia University, The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, and most recently for the International Center of Photography at Essex Crossing. Burke-Vigeland has worked closely with the New York Public Library, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and the New Museum. She serves as Chair of the Dean’s Council at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning and has lectured at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, New York University, and Harvard University. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Record, and Fast Company, among other outlets. Maddy holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute.

Roger Sherman, FAIA, is a Design Director and leader in Gensler Los Angeles’ Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) and urban impact-related initiatives. His projects range from an infrastructure and urban development plan for Northern Haiti, to a rebuild of a camp destroyed in the recent Malibu fire, to work in L.A’s most underserved communities, including an at-risk teen center and numerous supportive and affordable housing and mixed-use projects in South LA. Roger founded Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design and is the former Co-Director of cityLAB, an urban design thinktank at UCLA, where he is an Adjunct Professor. His work has been published in Newsweek, Fast Company, CNN and The History Channel, and exhibited at the Rotterdam and Venice Biennales. A Senior Fellow at both the Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto and the NewCities Foundation, Sherman has authored three books, including LA Under the Influence: The Hidden Logic of Urban Property, and has taught and lectured widely including at New York’s MoMA and TEDx. Roger is a graduate with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

In 2022, Maddy Burke-Vigeland retired from the firm.
