Gensler Voices: Gabby McCloy on the Learning Curve to Growth

If you could impart any piece of advice to individuals beginning their design career, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. There’s a huge learning curve in the transition from academia to the professional world, so it’s okay to not be an expert right away! Ask lots of questions, lean on your colleagues, and seek out opportunities to learn.

What are you most excited for when it comes to the future of architecture and design?

I’m most excited for the incredible potential that we have as architects and designers to create a better, more sustainable future. The global shift in the way we're approaching projects with environmental impact at the top of mind makes me feel optimistic in the face of the climate crisis. We’re continuously raising the bar for resilient design practices within the industry, and I’m excited to see net-zero carbon buildings become commonplace in the coming years.

What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?

Sounds so cheesy — but working at Gensler! I couldn’t be happier with where I’m at. Career development is intrinsic to the culture here because there are many avenues available for you to pursue what you’re passionate about, with people who will support you along the way. I feel that the opportunities for growth in my career are endless at Gensler, and that’s something I really value.
